In medieval times a candle was held to the mouth - a flicker of the candle was shown as a sign of life.

However, these signs were rejected by anatomist Jacques-Benigne Winslow in 1740, who recommended that resuscitation should be attempted on seemingly lifeless patients by stimulating various parts of the body with the "juices of onions, garlic and horse-radish, . . . whips and nettles, ... and by hideous Shrieks and excessive Noises." Pins were also inserted under the toenails.

In 1742 John Bruhier documented fifty-two examples of supposed live burial, in his book Dissertation de l'incertitude des signes de la mort, This fed the public's fears of premature burial, and placed growing pressure on doctors to come up with more reliable 'signs of death' as a diagnostic tool. German doctors concluded that putrefaction was the only reliable indicator of death. A number of cultures include an interval between death and disposal of the body that allows time for putrefaction. For example, the leichenhäuser (corpse houses) of 19th century Germany provided a place where 'corpses' were kept under surveillance until putrefaction was apparent.

The 'Safety Coffin' highlights people's uncertainty about pinpointing the moment of death and their fear of being buried alive. The safety coffin provided a means for "deceased" to signal the world above for help and salvation.

More immediate and drastic techniques have also been employed to ensure that the dead were really dead. Some people requested in their wills, that their head be severed, or their heart be pierced prior to burial as a measure to ensure they were truly dead. The invention of the stethoscope in 1819 removed the need for these extreme measures.

But medical intervention has also increased uncertainty. The invention of the artificial respirator in the 1950s meant that the cells of the body could be kept alive in the absence of a natural heartbeat. By 1968 when the first heart transplant was performed, it was already clear that there needed to be a diagnosis for death that was not based on heartbeat. A committee based at the Harvard Medical School in the USA, came up with a diagnostic criteria for death called brain death criteria.

Death is Shedding of the body

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_obSm6itODOQ/R7fjrQCP9HI/AAAAAAAAAF0/aUJWkMnMo6Q/s320/DEAD" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5167849429609215090" />

Conquest of the fear of Death

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_obSm6itODOQ/R7WHXQCP88I/AAAAAAAAAEk/OIixUfd1sLQ/s320/grief.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5167184980988654530" />And after all, if one must for some reason or other leave one's body and take a new one, is it not better to make of one's death something magnificent, joyful, enthusiastic, than to make it a disgusting defeat? Death is a clumsy and mechanical return to the endless round of existence and what you have not achieved in one life, you have to in the second, generally in much more difficult circumstances.<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_obSm6itODOQ/R7UHQACP87I/AAAAAAAAAEc/8P83HVqKT70/s320/teen_suicide_copy.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5167044118946247602" />

Death is not at all what you believe it to be. You expect from death the neutral quietness of an unconscious rest. But to obtain that rest you must prepare for it.

When you die you lose only your body and at the same time the possibilities of relation with and action on the material world. But all that belongs to the vital world does not disappear with the material substance; all you desire, attachments, cravings persist with the sense of frustration & disappointment, and all that prevents you from finding the expected peace. To enjoy the peaceful and eventless death you must prepare for it. And the only effective preparation is abolition of desires. So long as we have a body we have to act, to work, to do something; but if we do it simply because it has to be done, without seeking for the result or wanting it to be like this or like that, we get progressively detached and thus prepare ourselves for a restful death.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_obSm6itODOQ/R7UG5ACP86I/AAAAAAAAAEU/K32q0dzbPlo/s320/suicide.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5167043723809256354" />Know for certain that to commit suicide is the most foolish action that a man can do; because the end of the body does not mean the end of the consciousness and what was troubling you while you were alive continues to trouble you when you are dead, without the possiblity of diverting your mind which you can get whenh you are alive.

Hell | Heaven | Ghosts

Hell and the Heaven are often imaginary state of the soul or rather of the vital which it constructs about it after its passing. What is meant by Hell is a painful passage through the vital or lingering there, as for instance, in many cases of suicide where one remains surrounded by the forces of suffering and turmoil created by this unnatural and violent exist. There are ,of course also worlds of mind and vital worlds, which are penetrated with joyful or dark experiences. To name a few only:

*An actual contact with the soul of a human being in its subtle body and transcribed to our mind by the appearance of an image or hearing a voice.

*Apparitions which are the formations of one's own mind and take to the senses an objective appearance.

*Temporary possession of people by vital beings who sometimes pretend to be departed relatives etc.

You'll see that one of these cases, the first can a soul be posited and there no difficulty arises.

Progress of Inner Being

After death, the progress of inner being depends altogether upon the person. <img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_obSm6itODOQ/R7TtnACP8rI/AAAAAAAAACc/4ISL_kOITKQ/s320/soul1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5167015926780916402" />For everyone it is different. There are people - for example, writers, musicians- people who have lived on intellectual heights, who feel that they still have something further to do, that they have not finished what they have undertaken to do, have not reached the goal they have fixed for themselves, so they are ready to remain in the earth atmosphere as long as they can, with as much cohesiveness as possible and they try to manifest themselves and continue their progress in other human bodies.
I have seen many such cases. I have seen the very interesting case of a musician who was a pianist(a pianist of great worth), who had hands which were a marvel of skill, exactness, precisions, force, rapidity of movement, indeed, it was absolutely remarkable. This man died relatively Young with the feeling that if he had continued to live he would have continued to progress in his expression of music. And such was the intensity of his aspiration that his subtle hand maintain their form without being dissolved, and each time he met anyone a little respective and passive and a good musician, <img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_obSm6itODOQ/R7TvmwCP8tI/AAAAAAAAACo/UbtaFE170hw/s200/soul3.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5167018121509204690" />his hands would enter the hands of those who were playing - the person who was playing at the time could play well but in an ordinary way; but at that moment he became not merely a virtuoso but a wonderful artist during the time he played. The last to dissolve is a mental sheath. Finally the soul or physic being retries into the physic world to rest there till a new birth is close. This is the general course for ordinarily developed human beings. There are variations according to the nature of the individuals and his developments. For example, if the mental is strongly developed, then the mental being can be remain; so also can the vital, provided they are organized by and centered around the the true physic being; they share the immortality of the physic.

The soul gathers the essential elements of its experiences in life and makes that its basis of growth in the evolution;when it returns to birth it takes up with its mental, vital, physical sheaths so much of its Karma as is useful to it in the new life for further experiences.<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_obSm6itODOQ/R7TeKACP8qI/AAAAAAAAACU/mEp69g6vJks/s320/SAA.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5166998935890293410" />It is really for the vital part of the being that Shraddha and rites are done - to help the being to get rid of the vital vibrations which still attach it to the earth or vital worlds, so that it may pass quickly to its rest in the physic peace.
There is after death a period in which one passes through the vital world and lives there for a time. It is only the first part of the transit that can be dangerous & painful; in the rest one works out, under certain surroundings, the remnant of the vital desires and instincts which one had in the body. As soon as one is tired of these and able to go beyond, the vital sheath is dropped and a soul after a time needed to get rid of some mental survivals passes into a state of rest in the physic world and remains there till next next life on earth.

Tell The Spirit To Go Away

Sometimes when people are dying, they know that they are about to die. Why don't they tell the spirit to go away?
Well, That depends upon the people. Two things are necessary. First of all, nothing in your being, no part of your being should want to die, that does not happen often. You have always defeatist in you somewhere : Something that is tired, something that is disgusted, something that has had enough of it, something that is lazy, something that does not want to struggle and says: " Well Ah! Let it be finished, So much the better." That is sufficient, you are DEAD.
But it is a fact: If nothing, absolutely nothing in you consents to die. You'll not die. for someone to die, There is always a second, perhaps the hundredth part of a second when he gives his consent. If there is not this second of consent, he does not die.

WHY DEATH

Why is there Death?
This is a question which every person whose consciousness is awakened a little has asked himself at least once in his life. There is in the depths of the being such a need to perpetuate, to develop life, to prolong, that the moment one has a first contact with death, which, although it may quiet an accidental contact, is yet inevitable, there is a sort of recoil in the being.
In persons who are sensitive, it produces horror; in others, indignation. There is a tendency to ask oneself: "What is this Monstrous farce in which one takes part without wanting to, without understanding it? Why are we born, if it is only to DIE? Why all this effort for development, progress, the flowering of the faculties, if it is come to a diminution ending in decline and disintegration? ..." Some feel a revolt in them, others less strong feel despairs and always this question arises: " If there is a conscious WILL behind all that, This WILL seems to be monstrous."
But here GOD tells us that this was an indispensable means of awakening in the consciousness of matter the need for perfection, the necessity of progress, that without this catastrophe, all beings would have been satisfy with the condition they were in - perhaps... This is not certain. But then, we have to take things as they are and tell ourselves that we must find the way out of it all.
The fact is everything is in a state of perpetual progressive development, that is the whole creation, the whole universe is advancing towards a perfection which seems to recede as one goes forward towards it, for what seems a perfection at a certain moment is no longer perfect after a time. The most subtle states of being in the consciousness follow this progression even as it is going on, and the higher up the scale one goes, the more closely does th rhythm of the advance resemble the rhythm of the universal development, and approach the rhythm of the divine development; but the material world is rigid by nature, transformation is slow, very slow, there, almost imperceptible for the measurement of time as the human consciousness perceives it...and so there is a constant disequilibrium between the inner and outer movement, and this lack of balance, this incapacity of the outer forms to follow the movement of the inner progress brings about the necessity of the decomposition and the change of forms. But if, into this matter, one could infuse enough consciousness to obtain the same rhythm, if matter could become plastic enough to follow the inner progression, this rupture of balance would not occur, and death would no longer be necessary.
